Conference CfP: Beyond Boundaries: China in Disciplinary and Area Studies
30 June – 1 July, 2014, University of Oxford
The 3rd Oxford Graduate Conference on Contemporary China invites graduate students of all social science disciplines to share their views on the actual and ideal ‘academic positioning’ of Contemporary Chinese Studies through their own research.
In addition to the presentations on their specific research questions, we encourage the participants to present how, and why, they choose to use China as a case to illustrate mainstream social scientific theories, as a counterexample to challenge the theories, or simply as an exception that has little to do with the theories.
We encourage participants to demonstrate and justify their views on the relationship between Contemporary Chinese Studies, disciplinary studies, and area studies through their own methodological and theoretical contributions as well as empirical findings.
In addition to the main conference on 1 July, there will also be a roundtable discussion with prominent China scholars including Professor Rosemary Foot, FBA , Professor Vivienne Shue, FBA , and Professor Jeffrey Wasserstrom, Editor of the Journal of Asian Studies on the late afternoon on 30 June.
Free accommodation will be provided for participants who come from outside Oxford. Free lunch, drinks, and refreshments will be available to all presenters. It is also possible to reimburse moderate domestic travelling cost. For more information, please see the Call for Papers .
