“It makes sense for China to build up its own supply chain and Luxshare is in line with that state policy.” In a way, surprising it took so long for a Foxconn rival to emerge. Apple may welcome one as well.

Jonathan Cheng: Taiwanese iPhone assembler Foxconn is increasingly worried about a fast-rising mainland Chinese rival, Luxshare, which already makes AirPods for Apple. Luxshare has also received $150 million in government subsidies since 2016, Reuters found.

The Politics of Planning: As China’s new five-year plan comes into focus this week, it is important to understand that it is not just a plan, but a statist vision of planning – with bold claims on political power and its relationship to society. https://chinamediaproject.org/2020/10/28/the-politics-of-planning/

Re Readers of the bulletin should also note use of “preparing for war” (备战) in the section on national security, soon after the mention of “Xi Jinping Strong Military Thought” (习近平强军思想).

China has absolutely no idea how to run a Twitter network.
In this data-driven analysis of accounts Twitter has taken down over the past two years, I show just how poorly the CCP understands how to convey its message abroad.

Just in: Taiwan’s economy grew by 3.3% in the third quarter of 2020. That’s a lot by pandemic-era standards.

Chris Horton 何貴森: Contrary to what many believe, China is not the only major economy poised to avoid a recession this year. Taiwan, will release its third-quarter data this afternoon as exports are booming and consumption continues to rebound.

For WeChat users in the US, partisan divisions, misinfo, censorship were known features, but for the past few years, some have noticed a more disturbing trend: a shift towards pro-China vs. pro-America factions…and trolls.
