Re The day after the story ran, police and officials sought out the co-author of the story, Chen Kaiyue, who it turns out is a Shantou University journalism student who had assisted with reporting and translation of the local dialect. Chen parents were reportedly harassed.

Re Chen’s classmates appealed for help, saying police had paid a visit to his parents to “verify the situation,” and that the local Party secretary had phoned urging him to “write a document in order to eliminate the negative impact of the incident.”
