This. Entire. Thread.

It’s bad enough that journos reporting on China have to contend with surveillance, physical harassment, and targeting of sources in China by the CCP, and even worse to have these bad faith attacks coming from western “outlets.”

Felicia Sonmez: Folks, this is utter nonsense. @jonah_kessel is a phenomenal journalist who has done hard-hitting reporting on China, including this piece on a Tibetan man’s efforts to push back against the government’s efforts to erode Tibetan language and culture:

More than 1 in 3 children in China experience the prolonged absence of at least one parent, almost always due to migration. Since 2016 officials have paid attention to the plight of these left-behind children. But systems of support are thinly stretched. https://www.economist.com/china/2021/04/08/the-plight-of-chinas-left-behind-children

“I am inevitable” is my favorite line.

I can’t forget these words from Southern Weekend founder Zuo Fang when he spoke in Hong Kong in June 2014. As Hong Kong’s journalists struggle to maintain their independence and professionalism, they have become even more poignant.
