So sad to learn of Jonathan Spence’s death via his colleague @jbf1755’s Twitter feed/I know firsthand from the 1980s how kind he could be to some who didn’t study with him even as he was training amazing students/a graceful writer/a bold experimenter/a quietly mesmerizing speaker

Rest In Peace. You were one of the greats.

The Associated Press: Jonathan D. Spence, a British-born historian who became a longtime Yale University professor and scholar of Chinese studies, and attracted a wide following with his 1990 best-seller “The Search for Modern China,” has died at age 85.

I’m very sad to learn of Jonathan Spence’s passing - I absolutely love his books on Chinese history.

Sad day for the #sinophile folks in your life, send them a hug.

An obituary that I wrote for Spence (in Chinese—there are surprisingly few of his former students who write in Chinese, even fewer who write to the Mainland audience, so I thought I’d take the plunge on that side of the Pacific).【张泰苏

.@StandNewsHK announces it is ceasing operations and letting go of all staff, after HK police froze its assets and arrested six for publishing seditious material.

After Apple Daily, this is the second opposition news source that authorities have shut down this year.

How fitting and tragic that @StandNewsHK’s last story before the announcement of their closure was this video on “forbidden words”—the things we can no longer say and the platforms we’ve lost to say them.

CMP continues to watch Chinese discourse dry . . . so you don’t have to. Our latest on how Xi Jinping’s “Four Confidences” (四个自信) looks on the basis of today’s People’s Daily to be upgraded to the “Five Confidences.” https://chinamediaproject.org/2021/12/29/and-then-there-were-five/

Re The new buzzword is “historical confidence,” or lishi zixin (历史自信). Here it is in today’s most prominent PD headline.

For the past 4 years the “Four Confidences” formula affirming the strengths of CCP rule has been firmly in place, finally added to the Party Charter in 2017. But the “confidence doctrine” has now been upgraded with a 5th: “historical confidence.” https://chinamediaproject.org/2021/12/29/and-then-there-were-five/

Re The “confidence doctrine,” evolving from the “Three Confidences” to the now “Five Confidences,” is a great example of how CCP buzzwords (提法) evolve over time, generally with political cycles like Party anniversaries, plenums, congresses and so on.

Happy 2022, all! Here’s the review thread I promised on everything we know about how the Chinese party state monitors & tries to manipulate social media outside China.
