Thanks to @GeringTuvia for sharing this recent SMG video on “telling China’s story” with Zhang Weiwei, China’s new voice on discourse power and China in the world. The naivete and self-congratulation (and scripted nodding) can be extreme. But worth a view. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j99aYMqfrLk&t=2175s

Really great in-depth piece on something I’ve touched on: state media employees who mask their identities on international social media.

Kevin Schoenmakers 宋楷文: Several prominent Chinese state media journalist hide who they work for on their social media profiles, and instead seem to want to pass themselves off as independent reporters. For @cnmediaproject, I looked into why that might be.

The former director and editor-in-chief of the China Youth Daily newspaper,Xu Zhuqing, passed away in Beijing on January 5 from lung cancer. He led the paper through what many now see as its golden age in the intellectual ferment of the 1980s. https://chinamediaproject.org/2022/01/11/remembering-xu-zhuqing/

Part of the reason why I think the Xi vs Deng narrative is an oversimplified one is that you still see Maoists locked up for their political expressions in China. These cases are less known but not uncommon. https://www.scmp.com/news/china/politics/article/3162988/five-mao-fanatics-jailed-over-articles-smearing-former-chinese?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=share_widget&utm_campaign=3162988

Re @CarlMinzner Indeed, notable parallels here. Just as the CCP had its propaganda points ready to launch in the early weeks of 2020, interrupted for at least 10 weeks by Covid, the key agendas this year, about Xi Thought and the 20th Congress, risk looking out of touch if pushed hard now.
