“Mostly Harmless Econometrics” by Angrist and Pischke reduces theory to practice in a way that few, if any, have otherwise managed.

“Probability Theory: The Logic of Science” by Jaynes. Jaynes’ style verbose and comprehensive. This book reads like a lecture series, explaining concepts at the level of first principles in a way that is coherent and accessible.

Edit: Added “Probability Theory” by Jaynes.

We’ll see ebbs and flows, for as long as we continue to keep track of the results. Whether such data offer any value whatsoever at this point is another matter.

Lockdown Skepticism

Many shitholes of Reddit are running ban-bots that crawl your post history to determine whether you’ve posted in a number of purported “misinformation” subreddits, including /r/lockdownskepticism.

I see no evidence whatsoever that operators of those subreddits are even in a position to determine what “misinformation” is. Same for most who report “misinformation” here. Maybe there was a difference of opinion, but rarely more. It’s especially tiresome when I see that garbage from people who haven’t even tried to make themselves minimally informed so as to be able to speak on a matter coherently. This is an ax I’ve grinded since the beginning of the pandemic.

The worst offenders are the Dunning/Kruger-types who think that because they heard/read some very limited information, they are all of a sudden capable of distinguishing “fact” from “misinformation.” For example, there are some who — despite the state of the research — reflexively brand anything that discusses concepts like gain of function research as a “conspiracy theory,” when they can’t even define the term. The years of deep, comprehensive, reporting, discussion and hearings on that topic during the Obama administration have also been collectively forgotten.

In this subreddit, you will not be banned for posting there. Now or ever.

That many default subs engage in inexplicable stupidity . . . well, that’s beyond my control.

Speaking in generalities only and not with respect to any particular or individual user, it’s hard to distinguish between low-information posters and accounts that are actually and intentionally trying to push a narrative. Here’s an example: When most people express themselves, they don’t have remarkable things to say. A bot very well might sound a lot like a person and people might sound like bots, even if they’re talking in real life.

Another thing to consider is the impact of misinformation, including that which people may have heard from media, government or so called “experts.” Most people just believe what they hear from people who they think are credible. They aren’t skeptical, they don’t think and they don’t question. Even if they have the ability to understand how something works, they rarely undertake the effort.

This kind of mindless low effort nonsense adds exactly no value, here or anywhere.

285: A Forecasting Model Used by the CIA Predicts a Surprising Turn in U.S.-China Relations, submitted on 2022-06-03 09:57:28+08:00.

—– 285.1 —–2022-06-03 10:17:42+08:00:

Submission Statement:

Bruce Bueno de Mesquita is a rockstar in the geopolitical forecasting space. His game theoretic forecasting model is used by the CIA, among others, to assess future power relations among international stakeholders. The model considers stakeholders’ influence, positions, negotiating flexibility and level of focus on issues to predict who is calling the shots and how they will exercise power. By all counts, it’s one of the most precisely calibrated out there. For example, when the CIA ran it against historical datasets going back to the 1980s, the model’s predictions were correct 89% of the time (outperforming the company’s internal analysts, consistently).

While past performance isn’t necessarily an indicator of future results, the model now predicts a thaw in Sino-American relations. Reducing inflation is among Biden’s highest priorities. Yellen is determined to relax tariffs, because they are having an inflationary impact and will likely influence Biden to slash tariffs on Chinese consumer goods. The model forecast that Beijing will welcome the partial rollback and China would respond with further economic cooperation because doing so is in their interest.

Biden and Xi, who initially showed no interest in a deal, would go along, the model predicted, in part, because so much of their attention was now focused on other issues and because a deal met their needs. In fact, Biden said earlier this month that he was weighing whether to ease the tariffs. In the game, as in real life, the leaders make compromises they didn’t expect to make.

286: Bowing to the Prince: Why It’s a Mistake for Biden to Visit Saudi Arabia, submitted on 2022-06-03 22:46:42+08:00.

Kaye’s article was insightful and well reasoned.

For those who saw Biden as a champion of human rights, it is a grave disappointment: rewarding MBS with a handshake and photo op on the crown prince’s home turf would amount to an admission that autocrats can get away with murdering their opponents, so long as they keep the oil flowing.

In Washington, energy, and specifically oil, takes precedence over humanitarian concerns. That’s the rule, not the exception. It’s constant no matter which “party” is in control of the White House.

Here, the costs of standing on principle are unacceptably high. Whether intended or not, Kaye almost implies that anyone who saw biden as a “champion of human rights” clearly failed to see the writing on the wall.

In any case, current challenges with Saudi Arabia are not limited to humanitarian concerns. Or their consequential diplomatic fallout.

Something much more dangerous is on the horizon.

What does Saudi Arabia look like, in a post-“Green New Deal” world? It is possible we have already reached peak oil. Saudi Arabia has no incentive whatsoever to cooperate with American long term environmental interests, and every incentive to thwart them while extracting as much value as can be captured while it still can.

This is barely the beginning of the geopolitical disruption the move away from oil will cause.

Some good stuff in here. Too bad Harper’s wasn’t putting these things out there when some of us were saying these things two-plus years ago.

Everyone was too busy pretending to be “experts,” thinking they were “following the science.” All the while, they were doing no such thing.

—– 288.2 —–2022-06-05 04:52:13+08:00:

Not exactly. The point is simpler:

A lot of research has been done on the question of whether masks improve COVID outcomes.

Everyone who has looked at this issue finds nothing to support the proposition.

Those who claimed to find otherwise, didn’t.

More and better research is needed to support that claim, because there is no scientific evidence to support the conclusion now.

A tremendous amount of misinformation exists, that has caused people to think they are protected by using non-medical devices for medical purposes.

If you think you’re protected or protecting others, the evidence says otherwise.

So proceed understanding the risks you’re exposed to, as they exist in the world of reality.

As opposed to the state of collective delusion that people have otherwise been laboring under.

—– 288.4 —–2022-06-05 04:58:32+08:00:

Data are not good or bad. Data is what it is. The issue is what it says. And this Cochrane Review is correcting the record.

—– 288.5 —–2022-06-05 05:03:19+08:00:

lol . . . so that is precisely why this is important.

People have all these ideas about what reality is. But it turns out that people’s opinions aren’t worth anything if they are not supported with evidence.

Cochrane Reviews tell you what the evidence is, and whether it’s reliable.

That the usual ship of fools thinks otherwise is of no consequence.

The article does not say what you think it says. Your adjective-laden characterizations are inconsequential.

Spend some more time with the material and then ask questions. But right now, your attitude suggests that you’re not in a position to participate in a productive conversation.
