Read this thread. Absolutely essential to understanding China’s WeChat public accounts, or “gonghao” (公号).

FANG Kecheng 方可成: Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of WeChat public platform, or the commonly known “gonghao 公号”. Gonghao has since become the most important channel for Chinese to get news and information. It also gave birth to the “zimeiti (self-media/we media)” industry.

Re “Red country” emerged in the run-up to the Cultural Revolution and soared through that decade of horrors. During reform and opening, in the 32 years from 1980 to 2012, the term appeared just 19 times in the People’s Daily. Under Xi? So far 152 separate articles in the paper.
