385: Worldnews permanently banned me because I agreed with a title basically, submitted on 2022-09-26 04:21:58+08:00.

That you were permanently banned is not surprising. /r/worldnews is moderated by a group of individuals who reflexively use their positions of supposed “influence” to cultivate and enforce an information ecosystem that reflects their desired “consensus reality.”

Many moderators on subreddits like /r/worldnews (including to to the extent there is overlap between that subreddit and others, like /r/geopolitics) view their role as one of “public service.” Many believe they have not only the right, but the responsibility to ensure that only the “correct” ideas are “platformed.” Anything else is a “threat” to the “safety” of other users. Those folks do not view what they are doing as “censorship” or “silencing dissent,” so much as “countering misinformation” or curtailing supposed “fake news.”

For example, one such /r/worldnews moderator is affiliated with Bellingcat and purports to be an “instructor” at Portland State University where this person purportedly obtained a PhD in geography. As some part of his “academic research,” this person focuses on so-called “fascist creep.” Significantly, this person has no background, academic or otherwise, in political theory whatsoever. Yet, according to this person, it is enough that this person alone subjectively perceives your views to align with the so-called “alt right,” for you to be precisely such a “threat” to “civility” or “safety.” This individual has routinely banned numerous members for expressing views this person unilaterally has determined to be “bigoted.” So-called “bigotry,” of course, is measured by agreement with this person’s political values. After all, if this person perceives that you hold inappropriate views, according to this person you are an active threat and must be dispatched.

There is much more to say about this same individual, but what is most striking to me is this person’s incredible deficits in self awareness. When this person bans people who express views this person disagrees with, doing so is promoting “safety.” Or at least upholding “civility.” But there is no extent of misconduct that would prompt this person to ban someone whose views do not intrude upon the consensus reality this person has endeavored to cultivate. To the extent anyone who aligns with this person’s views engages in objective misconduct and is banned by someone else, this person interprets that ban as an act of “bias” that is necessarily “politically motivated.”

I am speaking from my own observations of this individual’s moderation behaviour on another subreddit over almost two years.

tl;dr on /r/worldnews, the moderation standard is simple: “for my friends, anything; for my enemies, the law”

Because you think all Americans pay close attention to the senate races of Pennsylvania?

I don’t even pay attention to who is running in my own state. If anyone, in this election.

Actually I should probably check that . . . but I don’t care atm.

I’ll care when we get closer to November. Maybe. But probably not.

389: Do you trust the medical profession?, submitted on 2022-09-27 08:53:05+08:00.

—– 389.1 —–2022-09-27 10:51:02+08:00:

For me, it depends on the “medical professional.” I dated a doctor whose specialty involved routine life and death decisions for a few years, and half the time he spent talking about how he was amazed some of his colleagues didn’t kill more people.

Most people aren’t in a position to evaluate the competence of their medical professionals. That’s worth keeping in mind, when reviewing these comments.

It is actually hilarious that u/DandelionSwine’s comment is currently the most upvoted.

Here’s some perspective, folks:

Imagine going to a doctor and being told opioids were ok for chronic pain management and not addictive at all.

Or that fentanyl was an ok thing to give to chronic pain patients, b/c you got kickbacks from the pharmaceutical company.

It happens all the time, every single day. And the fact that u/DandelionSwine is too ignorant to know how doctors can be illicitly compensated for prescribing decisions is just a reflection of naivety can be exploited by those with superior information.

—– 389.3 —–2022-09-27 11:35:24+08:00:

I’m going to say I understand all of that. And yet it is still better for our society to not fear doctors or the medical system, because overall, higher access to healthcare and education has raised people’s life expectancy and quality of life.

Now that is the point you should have made in the first instance.

Not that nonsense about scamming people into diabetes.

392: Why are private religious schools a thing?, submitted on 2022-09-28 01:23:47+08:00.

I assume you are in the United States, where we have freedoms that include freedom of religion, speech and assembly. Laws cannot get rid of private religious schools.

It turns out that the whole “evolution vs. religion” debate hasn’t mattered since the Scopes Monkey Trial. Most private religious schools do not fit into the category of ass-backward idiocy that a few fundamentalist churches in this country do, which you seem to be describing.

Those fundamentalist churches missed the boat on a number of things. For example, they never got the message that religion and science exist in distinct epistemological domains that never converge. Science, in general, and evolution, in particular, do not threaten the legitimacy of religious belief, observance, practice or faith writ large.

That can only be brought about by one’s subjective insecurity. And if you believed stupid things, like fundamentalists often are required to do, it’s natural to think they might be a bit insecure.

I went to a private, religious boarding school in the UK and a very minimal amount of my education actually involved religion.

I have to assume this is an American post. In Europe and even throughout most of America, religious private school is nothing like what the OP describes.

There are some evangelical right wing madrasas. But they are few. Most private religious schools are more like Columbia University than bastions of theological indoctrination.

This is what fucked up kids raised by fucked up parents do when they are left alone.

I think one assumption we can make is that whoever was supposed to be responsible for the supervision of this child demon did not do their job lol.

Any kid who needs to be supervised so he doesn’t go off and throw rocks at the neighbor’s car has a lot more problems than lack of supervision.
